Heart of gold: Lincoln woman rescues hundreds of disabled and terminally ill animals

Pudz Animal Sanctuary, South Killingholme, is in desperate need of more space and facilities for its animals.

Flo the dog was rescued after being shot and attacked with a machete. As a result, she’s now missing a front and back leg.

A Lincoln woman is looking for help from the public after opening her heart to over 100 animals in need.

Shena Fairless set up the Pudz Animal Sanctuary in 2013 to provide physical, emotional and financial help to animals that need desperate care. Since then she has taken in a variety of creatures from amputee dogs to terminally ill guinea-pigs, in an effort to give them a better quality of life.

Many of the animals in Shena’s care were previously due to be put to sleep. Flo, a dog with a front and back leg missing, was believed to have been shot multiple times and left for dead in her home country of Romania. She now lives a happy life in the comfort of her new Lincoln home with her own customized wheelchair.

Shena, 47, said: “With every special needs animal we’ve got we’ve been told to put them to sleep but we know they’ve got the chance at a good quality of life and we’ve proved it every time. So far the public have been fantastic.”

It was Shena’s cat Pudding that kick-started the motivation behind the Lincolnshire based organization. After rescuing him and his mum back in 1997, she took care of Pudding for 18 years until he passed away, and became the main inspiration behind the logo.

She has raised an impressive £20,000 so far but is aiming for a £100,000 goal to be able to buy more food, equipment and goods for the animals.
