Japan’s most powerful earthquake since records began has struck the north east coast of the country and triggered a tsunami.
The tremor has been registered as 8.9 on the richter scale and a tsunami warning has been issued across the Pacific to North and South America.
At the moment the death toll from the disaster is unclear but the police have said that 200 to 300 bodies have been found in the port of Sendai.
Serina Yamazaki graduated from the University of Lincoln in 2007 and now lives in Japan.
