Lincoln Castle has received over £1million from the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund.

The fund gives money to arts, heritage and culture sites across the UK to help them during the pandemic.

Councillor Nick Worth, executive for culture and heritage at Lincolnshire County Council said: “It’s really important to get funding like this. We would struggle to do this on our own.

“I think it’s really important, not just for the people of Lincoln but for the whole of Lincolnshire and wider because it’s a great cultural venue and a tremendous asset for the area.”

The grant will be used for essential work and maintenance to the castle and its grounds.

This includes repair work to the castle walls.

The castle is one of several arts, heritage and culture sites across Lincoln to be selected, along with Lincoln Cathedral,  New Theatre Royal and the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre all receiving the grant too.

Heritage, arts and culture sites have all suffered extended closure due to the pandemic.

Visit Lincoln’s CEO, Charlotte Goy said: “Although these businesses can’t function the way they used to, it is absolutely critical that they’re given the right support now.

“This is so we can protect these assets to then attract people back in when it is safe to do so.

“By attracting people back in, we will restart the local economy, restart the local supply chain and protect jobs in tourism across greater Lincolnshire.”
