Lincoln City face 2-1 defeat in FA Trophy semi-final

Just a few days after Lincoln City’s 5-0 ’emotionally and physically’ draining defeat by Arsenal in the FA Cup, Lincoln have once again faced defeat in the first leg of their FA Trophy Semi-Final at the hands of York City.

Unfortunately for Lincoln, their away lead didn’t last long into the second half. Eight minutes after the break and York were level through front-man Vadaine Oliver’s header. This appeared to knock the confidence of the Lincoln players, who were still licking their wounds from the demoralising defeat in London.

Less than 20 minutes later, the ongoing pressure from York paid off as they took the lead via a large stroke of fortune. Adriano Moke drove the ball forward from his own half before taking a hopeful shot that hit Scotsman Aidan Connolly before bobbling into the net.

Danny Cowley tried to turn the tie back in Lincoln’s favour by bringing on FA Cup heroes Matt Rhead and Alan Power but it was too late, leaving Lincoln with an uphill battle when they play the second leg at Sincil Bank on Saturday for a place at Wembley.

James Williams, LincSport editor, was at the match, he said: “They looked great for the first 15 minutes’ said Mr Williams. It seemed that Lincoln had not been phased by their trip to the Emirates Stadium at the weekend, especially on the 14th minute when Lee Angol was brought down in the box before he dusted himself down and scored from the spot to give Lincoln a 1-0 lead.”

“It stayed that way until half-time, with Williams saying Lincoln were ‘dominating the game and the decision to make nine changes looked perfectly justified.”
