Lincoln welcomes back rowers after 2 years of COVID frustration

Hundreds of rowers returned to Lincoln for the annual Head of the River Race that took place on Sunday, March 13.

Paddy Ibbotson, president of Lincoln Rowing Club (LRC), was delighted to see the event back on after COVID-19 put a halt to proceedings.

“For many this was their first race in over 27 months – thanks to the pandemic – it’s great to get back to competing.

“We were keen to get going, we’ve had a few scares with the weather but thanks to all the volunteers the event has ran smoothly, I personally can’t wait for next year already.”

Rowers of all ages entered the race, the youngest participant being 11 and the oldest 74 as novice and expert crews battled to be crowned Head of the River.

The 1.5km Junior Head started in Washingborough whilst Senior racers started further up the river 3.5km from the finish where they were met by dozens of supporters.

LRC members came out in full force as around 50 volunteers lined the river Whitham.

Volunteer Debbie Speed awaited competitors alongside a friendly catering team supplying hot soups and sandwiches to the rowers.

One rower from Nottingham Rowing Club said: “The home-made carrot and parsnip soup is the highlight – very warming – just what you need after being out on the river.”

Lincoln’s eight (8+) were the fastest on the River with a time of 12 minutes 10 seconds. Whilst a double (2x) from Sheffield took the Junior prize with a time of 7 minutes 49 seconds.

Lincoln’s eight-man boat was awarded with a cut glass prize for posting the fastest competitive time of 12 minutes and 10 seconds on the day.

Crewmember Sam Veitch said: “It was an amazing experience to be able to race on our own river. The win means even more on our home course.”
