The NFU is actively supporting farmers in the Lincoln area who have been affected by unprecedented levels of rain which has led to rivers bursting their banks and flooding already saturated ground.

Rhonda Thompson, adviser for Lincolnshire at the National Farmers Union said: “We are becoming very concerned with the rain that is forecast to come which is having an effect on farmers in Lincolnshire.”

One Lincoln area farmer, Henry Ward has seen his land completely submerged since the River Witham burst its banks last week.

He said that the Environment Agency had given no advice to him and other farmers in the surrounding area.

Mr. Ward said: “Farms are extremely important to human lifestyles. The current weather situation is going to impact us terribly.”

Barlings Eau River burst its banks nearby, leaving Mr. Ward’s farm submerged in over 15 millimetres of water.

Further flooding is expected in Lincolnshire this week after the release of more weather warnings.

The Environment Agency has released yellow warnings for areas in the midlands, including Lincoln, putting hundreds of homes and farms at risk of more flooding.

Yellow weather warnings advise people to be prepared to take action.

On Wednesday, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) announced that it will extend its Farming Recovery Fund to support people affected by flooding over recent weeks.

The National Farmers Union has welcomed the move from the government.

Mrs. Thompson added: “Homes and businesses are currently a priority for support and as farms are businesses, we are working with the authorities to support those affected.”

The Environment Agency says that it is doing all it can to support those who are being affected by recent flooding.
