Lincolnshire footballers to benefit from £25m grassroots football boost

Concerns that funding may fall short for some amateur clubs

Lincolnshire footballers will be hoping some of the £25m announced in the budget will be heading their way.

1600 clubs who are part of the county FA are desperately hoping they will get cash for pitches and other facilities.

The Government funding will be enough to build 700 new pitches, and it will go alongside a £300m summer sports recovery package for professional sport.

Ben Turczyn, men’s team Head Coach at Hykeham Tigers, said: “With roughly 43,000 grassroots clubs in the UK that only roughly works out at around £600 per club.

He continued:  “I believe 3G/4G pitches are needed more around Lincolnshire, as everywhere is full up over the winter period so we often have to share pitches.”

The government’s Football Foundation has made more than £16m available in grants for grassroots football to restart after restrictions eased in late March.

These grants form a key part of the Foundation’s overall Grass Pitch Programme, which hopes to improve at least 5000 pitches by June 2024.

Alex Bond, manager of a Bardney Panthers youth team, said: “We welcome the fresh investment, particularly as we are setting up new under seven, eight and ten teams next season.

“Children have so many other distractions and forms of entertainment, but physical exercise is vital for their health and wellbeing.”
