With the bad weather set to continue past the weekend, pet owners are being asked to take extra care when exercising their pets. Family pets are being made seriously ill by the industrial salt being spread on the roads around the country.
As animals pass through the ‘de-icing’ salt on the road, the residues from the salt, stick to the feet and fur of the animals
and are then ingested when they go to clean them selves.
The rock salt can cause dehydration, and liver failure, while antifreeze in the mix contains the ethylene glycol, which can be lethal when ingested and left untreated.Vets are advising that owners check their animals as soon as they get them home, that paws should be washed and fur that comes into contact with the pavements should be trimmed.
Charlotte Childs from the RSPCA explains their have been a few cases.
‘Our inspectors have seen a few cases, we’ve had a couple of anti-freeze incidents in Saxilby, which your pets think tastes sweet but is a poison. If you notice your animal acting strangely taking them to the vet straight away, the quicker it’s pick up on the better.’
