The Brayford pool gets new floating gardens

Lincolnshire Rivers Trust are making the Brayford more Eco-friendly

Volunteers hard at work

The Lincolnshire Rivers Trust have put their volunteer team hard at work planting floating gardens in the Brayford Pool, which will make it a better place for wildlife.

Team Leader and senior project officer Gail Talton said “The new floating ecosystems will help keep the pool clean and increase biodiversity, the roots will give the little fish somewhere to hide and the flowers on top will attract pollinators, we’re hoping soon we will be able to find Dragonflies flitting around our flower beds.”

The floating gardens were designed and supplied by Biomatrix water, and allow plants to grow on top of the water, helping oxygenate the water whilst providing green habitats for animals in the water or on land.

“Most importantly it gives these concrete banks some colour!” says Mrs Talton

Mrs Taltons’ volunteer team worked for three days to install the new ecosystems along the riverbanks.

Phil Swales is part of the Lincoln Canoe club, and volunteered with the trust to give something back to the river he loves:

he said “It’s all about giving back… It’s hard work, but it all pays off in the end. If we can take the time to look after our waterways and our environment, it will take the time to look after us too.”

One week on from Mr Swales planting them, Marsh Marigolds have bloomed on the north wall.

Wildlife are already making homes in the floating gardens

The project jointly funded by Anglian water, the Environment agency and The City of Lincoln Council is part of an ongoing project to revitalise and rejuvenate the city’s water ways.
