The green light has been given to four months of repairs on Lincoln’s Pelham Bridge

Lincoln motorists are set to expect yet more delays on their daily commutes.

Nearly £800,000 worth of repairs have been given the go-ahead for Pelham Bridge. Officials from Lincolnshire County Council claim the re-waterproofing work that needs to be done has been delayed for several years because of the construction work on the Lincoln Eastern Bypass.

The bridge will not be completely closed during the works. Restricted traffic will be allowed to pass with one lane in each direction remaining open whilst work takes place on the other carriageway.

Pedestrians will have to find another route however, as they will be diverted on to the High Street due to the closure of the footpath on the bridge.

Karen Cassar, the assistant director for highways at the Lincolnshire County Council said: “This work is essential to make sure that water and salt can’t get into the joints of the bridge and weaken the structure. The bridge hasn’t been re-waterproofed since it was built over 60 years ago.

“By the time work starts, drivers will be able to use the Lincoln Eastern Bypass, which will provide more options and should reduce some of the traffic having to cross Pelham Bridge.”

Pelham Bridge was originally opened by the Queen in 1958 and is set to have its expansion joints replaced and be resurfaced, as well as the re-waterproofing work.

A new barrier will also be installed between the footpath and the road on the bridge in order to provide extra safety for pedestrians.

Works on the bridge will start in January 2021 and finish in early May 2021.
