Lincoln City’s LNER Stadium played host to the third instalment of the Peter Burr Memorial Cup, a charity football match raising money for the British Heart Foundation. It was the first time the game had been played at the stadium.
British Heart Foundation FC was set up in 2017 by Gary Burr in memory of his father Peter, who died suddenly from a heart attack the same year. The team plays games across Lincolnshire raising money and awareness for the British Heart Foundation.
Speaking after the game, Mr Burr said, “We’re doing this in memory of dad, so I’m really proud yeah.”
Almost £3000 was raised on the day, and off of the pitch there were opportunities to get involved, with a charity raffle organised by the Red Imps Community Trust and a halftime crossbar challenge.
The match was the biggest so far, featuring a side made up of Imps’ legends, including: John Schofield who made over 250 appearances for Lincoln City, former Nottingham Forrest and Liverpool defender Jack Hobbs, and midfielder Terry Fleming. The former players came out 4-3 winners in a competitive match.
Mr Fleming reflected on the opportunity to play at Sincil Bank, “It’s really good first of all to be invited back to play here.
To play here for a good cause as well is extra special and obviously all the proceeds go to the British Heart Foundation which is fantastic.”
BHF FC have now raised over £15,000 for the British Heart Foundation and Gary Burr’s next target is £20,000.
