Cinemas worldwide may be closed for the foreseeable future, but there is still a whole host of hotly anticipated films waiting for us when those doors open again. Here are five films to look out for in the coming months.
Black Widow
Release date: November 6
The long-awaited Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow solo movie will be kicking off Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe six months later than intended due to the coronavirus pandemic. Pushed back to November 6, it will take the slot previously held by Marvel’s The Eternals (now due out in February 2021).
Set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, the film follows Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) as she confronts her past in Europe and takes on a mysterious new villain named Taskmaster.
The Green Knight
Release date: May 29
Its May release date may now seem too optimistic, but our eyes have been locked onto David Lowery’s upcoming medieval fantasy ever since the teaser trailer dropped in February.
Based on an Arthurian story, the film follows King Arthur’s nephew Sir Gawain (Dev Patel) in his quest to find and challenge the eponymous green giant.
This is David Lowery’s second film to be distributed by A24, the acclaimed company behind writer-director Ari Aster’s horror hits Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019). While The Green Knight might not look quite as terrifying, its dark and eerie trailer suggests that it will be no fairy tale.
Soul
Release date: November 20
Five years after its existential tear-jerker Inside Out taught us about emotions, Pixar is back with an even more philosophical concept.
Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) is a music teacher and talented pianist who lands a dream gig at a club before accidentally falling down a manhole. His soul becomes separated from his body, and he must find a way to get back before it’s too late.
As well as being another unique idea from the brain of Pixar maestro Pete Docter, Soul is the studio’s first film to feature an African-American protagonist. What better way is there to start the decade than by shattering the glass ceiling?
Bill & Ted Face the Music
Release date: August 21
Party on, dudes! The most lovable pair of idiots in film history are finally back 29 years after their last hilarious adventure in Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991), the sequel to Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989). Rumours that a third film was in the works began circulating back in 2010 following an interview with actor Keanu Reeves, but the project was not greenlit until May 2018.
The film is set to follow Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves), now all grown up with families of their own, as they are tasked with writing a song that will save the universe.
No Time To Die
Release date: November 12
The upcoming 25th film in the James Bond series hasn’t had the smoothest ride. Production was interrupted twice when Daniel Craig and a crew member were injured in separate incidents on set, and then the film’s original April release was pushed back to November due to the pandemic.
No Time to Die will see Craig return as Bond for the final time as the 00 agent comes out of retirement to help find missing scientist Valdo Obruchev. As well as bringing back Bond’s MI6 cohort, his love interest Dr Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) and his foster brother-turned-enemy Blofeld (Christoph Waltz) the film will introduce new agents Nomi (Lashana Lynch) and Paloma (Ana de Armas).
Topping off the all-star cast is Rami Malek as Safin, Bond’s new nemesis whom many have theorised is secretly classic Bond villain Dr No.
