University of Lincoln funds its very own police officer

The new police constable will be patrolling the campus next month

The University of Lincoln is to have its own dedicated police presence on campus and out in the local community.

PC Mark Wrigley will be embedded within the university community, splitting office time between the Student Wellbeing Centre and the Student Support Centre.

He will patrol on foot, cycle and vehicle around campus and out into the local community.

PC Mark Wrigley will spend his time at the Student Support Centre, which is situated inside the University of Lincoln’s Minerva Building

The university will be funding the post for a fully-warranted Police Constable, as part of its ongoing commitment to proactively look after the wellbeing of students and staff.

Many universities have their own police presence. At the University of Bristol, Sian Harris is their dedicated police officer. Sian said: “I deal with anti-social behaviour and crimes that occur at the university and attempt to reduce incidents through investigation, education and patrols.”

Inspector Claire Hime said: “This is a model we have seen work well at other universities, and we’re excited to get started.”

The University of Lincoln said: “The appointment also aims to provide further reassurance to the women and girls on campus that their safety is a number one priority for both the university and Lincolnshire Police.”

Katie Hukns is a student at Lincoln, and she said: “If it helps at least one girl or anyone for that matter get home safe or escape a bad situation then I’m very glad it’s here. Personally, I am not reassured by the presence of police especially after events in the news over the past couple of years and historically.”
