Chief Constable of Lincolnshire Police, Bill Skelly, has asked the public to take care on the roads as winter approaches.
In his most recent vlog on the Lincolnshire police website, he said: “As we approach the dark nights, I’d ask you to look after your own personal safety. Please be careful on our roads.”
He added: “Here in Lincolnshire we suffer with some of the highest proportionate road casualties in the entire country, so I’d urge you to look after your own safety when on those roads.”
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), “Each year, when the clocks go back in the autumn, there is a marked spike in the number of vulnerable road users killed and seriously injured.”
RoSPA’s Chief Executive suggested that a move to British Summer Time (GMT+1) all year round could save many lives by providing an extra hour of daylight throughout the autumn and winter.
Motoring organisation RAC have offered advice for drivers making journeys in the dark, such as taking more regular night-time trips to hone their skills.
