A Lincoln man is set to leave for Bangladesh in May where he will spend twelve weeks volunteering in the local community to help fight poverty.
Karl Parrish, 23, will be working on projects led by international development organisation, Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), as part of a fully government funded program, International Citizen Service (ICS).
ICS is a development program that brings people aged 18-25 to fight poverty in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
He will be working alongside Bangladeshi volunteers to tackle a wide range of issues, from poverty, education, agriculture and child marriage. He will also help to improve the knowledge and employability skills of young people.
Karl said: “I’m really looking forward to working alongside Bangladeshi volunteers because it’s something I’ve not experienced before, working with local people.
“It’s going to be a completely new experience for me, living with a host family overseas and being able to fully integrate with the local community.
“Being around people my age who are trying to make a difference will also be great and I can’t wait to dig in to what the whole project’s about and get involved.”
Before he embarks on his journey, Karl will have to raise £800 for VSO, which will contribute towards future projects.
After the twelve week long project, Karl will also have to take on an “Action at Home” project, which will help to ensure that his new skills benefit the local community.
